The portraitist Joseph Richard Essig was born in Wallingford, Pennsylvania in 1902. He graduated from the British Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, Italy, and pursued his art training at the Pennsylvania Museum, the Metropolitan Museum in New York City, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Essig painted many portraits, including President Eisenhower and President Nixon.
